Trailer hire questions answered
The questions we are asked most often about hiring a trailer in Plymouth — cost, sizes, towing, deposits and collection from our Roborough base.
- How much does trailer hire cost in Plymouth?
- Daily rates start at £20 a day for the small Brenderup 1150S utility trailer and run to £65 a day for the Brian James A4 car transporters and the Ifor Williams TT1066 tipper. Rates are tiered, so the daily price drops for hires of 3–4 days and again for 5 days or more. A refundable deposit is taken on top of the hire charge.
- What size trailer do I need?
- For garden waste, tip runs and small house moves the Brenderup 1150S (approx. 2.05m x 1.15m) or the Ifor Williams P7E is usually enough. For heavier site loads, aggregates or spoil, the TT1066 tipper is the right choice. To move a car, use a Brian James A4 car transporter — 4.5m or 5.0m bed. For horses or covered removals, the enclosed Ifor Williams 505 is the one.
- Can I tow a Brian James trailer with my car?
- The Brian James A4 car transporters are twin axle with a gross capacity of 2600kg and a maximum load on the trailer of 1850kg. Your towing vehicle needs adequate towing capacity for the loaded weight — check your vehicle handbook or V5C before booking. If you are unsure, call us on 07779 319232 and we will talk it through.
- How does trailer hire work?
- Choose your trailer on the booking page, pick your collection and return dates on the calendar, add delivery if you need it, then pay by card online or choose to pay cash on collection. You collect from our base in Roborough, Plymouth, on your collection date and bring the trailer back on the return date.
- What do I need to bring when collecting a trailer?
- A number plate that matches your towing vehicle (we do not supply plates), your driving licence and proof of address for our records, and payment for the hire charge and refundable deposit if you have not already paid online.
- Do I need insurance to hire a trailer?
- Yes. You must be insured for towing before you collect the trailer. You are responsible for the trailer while it is in your possession, including damage, theft, tyres, lights and cleanliness.
- Can I hire a trailer for a weekend?
- Yes. Collection and return dates are counted as inclusive hire days, so a Saturday to Sunday hire is 2 days. Availability for each individual trailer is shown live on the booking calendar.
- Can I return a trailer early?
- You can bring a trailer back early, but trailers are hired for the full period agreed at booking and the full hire charge is payable at the start of the hire. No refund or reduction is given for unused days after an early return.
- How much is the deposit and when do I get it back?
- The refundable deposit is £150 on the small and general utility trailers and £250 on the car transporters, tipper and enclosed 505. It is returned once the trailer has been checked back in, less the cost of any damage, loss, cleaning or other costs incurred.
- Do you deliver trailers around Plymouth and Devon?
- Collection is from Roborough, Plymouth. Local delivery and collection can be arranged subject to your location and our availability — the booking page quotes a delivery price automatically from your postcode.
